We often get told, "It'll only hurt you if you let it" but what society fails to tell its women is that "we will make sure it hurts". Beauty standards remain unattainable unless through false media and manipulation of images. Struggles with that perfect winged eyeliner, or making your eyebrows visible to a far away camera continue to be some of the 'biggest' troubles to teens. To our society, we are nothing if not beautiful, but what many fail to see is the pain in becoming this version of "beautiful" being placed on us. An artificial beauty that in no way comes naturally from when we sleep to waking up. We take the time out of our days, each day, to put on a pretty appearance so we can feel like we have a strong barrier to facing the outside world ready to judge our looks.
Our beauty is pain, do not let our smiles fool you into thinking otherwise.
